Bookstaver"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>In 1933, Dr. Barnet S. Bookstaver became President of the Teaneck Board of Health.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.teanecktoday.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/03\/1934-12_Bookstaver-Clipping.jpg\" data-rel=\"lightbox-image-0\" data-rl_title=\"\" data-rl_caption=\"\" title=\"\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-4278 alignleft\" href=\"https:\/\/www.teanecktoday.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/03\/Bookstaver-1-salary-check.jpg\" data-rel=\"lightbox-image-1\" data-rl_title=\"\" data-rl_caption=\"\" title=\"\">salary of $1 per year<\/a> (turning down the $1,800 salary offered), which paid for child hygiene stations at the Town House, Longfellow and Emerson schools, instead.<\/p>\n<p>He served our school system as a full-time medical doctor, the police and fire department surgeon, and the head of our Health Department.<\/p>\n<p>Dr. Bookstaver settled in Teaneck in 1928 with his wife Anna and four children (after retiring from working as an OB\/GYN in NYC, working for Hebrew Convalescent Home of NYC, the physician in charge of the American Red Cross Hospital of NYC and other efforts).<\/p>\n<h2>Quick work against epidemics<\/h2>\n<p>Dr. Bookstaver immediately created a reporting system for illnesses, as well as quarantine measures to be put in place to monitor outbreaks of diseases.<\/p>\n<p>He instituted tuberculosis patch tests and insisted that all children in the schools be inoculated against diphtheria and whooping cough.\u00a0 He also said all students should be vaccinated against smallpox.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.teanecktoday.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/03\/Bookstaver_Influenza-epidemic.jpg\" data-rel=\"lightbox-image-2\" data-rl_title=\"\" data-rl_caption=\"\" title=\"\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-medium wp-image-4276\" of contagious disease incidents in Teaneck dropped from 1,143 to 561.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.teanecktoday.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/03\/Diseases-decreased-considerably.jpg\" data-rel=\"lightbox-image-4\" data-rl_title=\"\" data-rl_caption=\"\" title=\"\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-medium wp-image-4295\" regarding air quality (ragweed), building inspections, food sanitation and smoking on public busing.\u00a0 He created free eye clinics and offered examinations for children.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.teanecktoday.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/03\/Bookstaver-accomplishments.jpg\" data-rel=\"lightbox-image-5\" data-rl_title=\"\" data-rl_caption=\"\" title=\"\"><img Connections<\/h2>\n<p>In Joy Appelbaum&#8217;s book, History of the Jews of Teaneck (<a href=\"https:\/\/catalog.bccls.org\/polaris\/search\/title.aspx?ctx=1.1033.0.0.7&amp;pos=1&amp;cn=90677\">available at the Teaneck Library<\/a>), she describes Dr. Bookstaver as &#8220;one of 17 children from a poor, Jewish immigrant family&#8221; and &#8220;although his medical practice was very extensive and substantial, he managed to devote a considerable portion of his time to civic, religious and social endeavors&#8221;.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Captain of Teaneck Volunteer Ambulance Corp (<a href=\"https:\/\/archive.teanecklibrary.org\/parks\/bookstaver\/index.html\">TVAC<\/a>) and <a href=\"https:\/\/archive.teanecklibrary.org\/parks\/bookstaver\/index.html\">donated<\/a> first ambulance<\/li>\n<li>Helped organize Our Savior Lutheran Church<\/li>\n<li>Charter member of Bergen County Reform Temple (renamed Temple Emeth)<\/li>\n<li>Started Teaneck&#8217;s first Jewish Congregation, the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.teanecktoday.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/03\/Jewish-Center-Incorporation.jpg\" data-rel=\"lightbox-image-6\" data-rl_title=\"\" data-rl_caption=\"\" title=\"\">Teaneck title=\"\">finding the first Rabbi<\/a>, and donating the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.teanecktoday.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/03\/Bookstaver-Torah-Donation.jpg\" data-rel=\"lightbox-image-9\" data-rl_title=\"\" data-rl_caption=\"\" title=\"\">Torah<\/a> \/ cemetary plots.\u00a0 He also helped organize Teaneck&#8217;s <a href=\"https:\/\/archive.teanecklibrary.org\/Religious\/index.html\">very first Jewish services<\/a> in the home of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.teanecktoday.com\/blog\/teaneck-history\/israel-doskow\/\">Israel Doskow<\/a>.<\/li>\n<li>Supplied funds for a second mortgage for Teaneck&#8217;s American Legion Post #128 Headqarters)<\/li>\n<li>Campaign Chair of War Bonds drive<\/li>\n<li>Trustee of North Jersey College and Director of the School of Public Health<\/li>\n<li>Helped form the Teaneck Schweiger-Dobrow JWV Post<\/li>\n<li>Honorary Life Member of Teaneck PBA<\/li>\n<li>Worked with Boy Scouts, Teaneck Rotary and Teaneck Friend&#8217;s of the Legion and Bergen County Elks<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2>Encouraged others to move to Teaneck<\/h2>\n<blockquote><p>&#8220;I do indeed recall the warm relationship between my father and Dr. Bookstaver and I have a dimmer recollection that Dr. Bookstaver&#8217;s enthusiasm about Teaneck led a good many of his friends and acquaintances to settle there&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p>&#8211; Paul A. Fizpatrick, members of the Board of Education, the Director of the Teaneck Public Library, President of the Chamber of Commerce and numerous other residents.\u00a0 After review by the PPRAB, in August of that year, Council unanimously voted to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.teanecktoday.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/03\/Bookstaver-Park.jpg\" data-rel=\"lightbox-image-15\" data-rl_title=\"\" data-rl_caption=\"\" title=\"\">rename Station park<\/a> in memory of Dr. Barnet S.
