{"id":3624,"date":"2019-08-23T20:02:04","date_gmt":"2019-08-23T20:02:04","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.teanecktoday.com\/blog\/?p=3624"},"modified":"2019-08-23T20:02:04","modified_gmt":"2019-08-23T20:02:04","slug":"superintendents-letter-on-preschool-district-office-plans","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.teanecktoday.com\/blog\/board-of-education\/superintendents-letter-on-preschool-district-office-plans\/","title":{"rendered":"Superintendent&#8217;s Letter on Preschool &#038; District Office Plans"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The following letter (<a href=\"http:\/\/www.teaneckschools.org\/protected\/ArticleView.aspx?iid=6YYG3Y2&amp;dasi=4GBPB\">link here<\/a>) was received via email today from the Superintendent of Teaneck Schools, Dr. Irving:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>Dear Teaneck Community,<\/p>\n<p>On Wednesday, August 21, our Board of Education approved two resolutions that are essential to moving this district forward for our children and this community.<\/p>\n<p>The first resolution solidifies our commitment to the expansion of preschool education<!--more--> \u2013 which research clearly shows is critical to a child\u2019s future educational success.<\/p>\n<p>Prior to the 2018-2019 school year, Teaneck Public Schools provided free\u00a0<em>half-day<\/em>\u00a0preschool to only 85 general education children.\u00a0 After being award a highly coveted $1.3 million preschool expansion aid grant from the NJ Department of Education in the fall of 2018, we were able to move to a free\u00a0<em>full-day<\/em>\u00a0program in January 2019 and increased our general education enrollment to 114 children.\u00a0 An additional $2.7 million grant in the spring of 2019 helped us to further increase our full-day pre-k enrollment number to 195 children for the 2019-2020 school year.<\/p>\n<p>Although serving nearly 200 children is a great improvement in one year\u2019s time, it is important to note that there are over 400 preschool-eligible children in Teaneck. \u00a0As Superintendent, I want to make sure that all of our children have the opportunity to benefit from free preschool.\u00a0 The challenge is that we simply do not have enough facility space to meet this need.<\/p>\n<p>After many discussions with our Board and various community groups, we looked into contracting with other Teaneck preschool providers while also looking at our own existing facilities.\u00a0 Many residents know that our current district administration office was once a viable school in this\u00a0district.\u00a0 With great consideration and a review of how to bring \u201cEugene Field\u201d back online as a preschool, I wanted to ensure that we did so without needing to go out for a referendum or increasing the tax burden on Teaneck residents.\u00a0 We also took into consideration the fact that in order to increase the number of children we would serve, we have one last chance to receive an additional $1.4 million preschool expansion funding from the State (must submit our preschool growth numbers by November 2019).<\/p>\n<p>Naturally, if Eugene Field becomes a district preschool center \u2013 one that will enable us to serve 387 children with a quality preschool education \u2013 then we must relocate our district administration offices.<\/p>\n<p>The second approved resolution, which requires NJ Department of Education approval, would relocate our administration offices to a modular building on Teaneck Road (on the Thomas Jefferson Middle School property). Until this is ready in the fall of 2020, we will lease space at the Glenpointe.<\/p>\n<p>Please note that for these two projects, we will utilize\u00a0<u>existing<\/u>\u00a0Capital and Maintenance Reserves funds (funding that can only be used to\u00a0<em>build or fix<\/em>\u00a0facilities).
