ADDING ARTICLE XXXIV, \u201cPRIVACY\u201d TO CHAPTER 2 OF THE TOWNSHIP CODE ENTITLED \u201cCHARTER\/ADMINISTRATIVE CODE\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n

This ordinance will ban the use of facial recognition surveillance technologies by the Township.<\/p>\n

These technologies have resulted in innocent people (including this one here in NJ<\/a>), being held for crimes they didn\u2019t commit. Crimes there were not even anywhere close to. 10 days. Sitting in a cell for a crime you didn\u2019t commit.<\/p>\n

This man, the first to be arrested after being fingered by an \u201calgorithm\u201d, spent 30 hours in jail while his 5 yr old daughter cried at home. He told her he\u2019d be right back as they arrested him.<\/p>\n

As\u00a0<\/span>CJ Ciaramella<\/a> <\/span>said at Reason<\/a>:<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cWhile the potential benefits of reliable facial recognition technology shouldn’t be dismissed out of hand, a sloppy panopticon is almost as dangerous as an effective one.\u201d <\/span><\/p>\n

Maybe one day, but not today.<\/span><\/p>\n

Thank you to our municipal counsel John Shahdanian, Bill Rupp and Molly Lustig, as well as <\/span>Matt Cagle<\/a>,\u00a0<\/span>Jake Snow<\/a> and <\/span>the folks at\u00a0<\/span>ACLU<\/a> (along with <\/span>many others) that have been pushing the issue. <\/span><\/p>\n

Now we need to build out policies for how municipalities adopt tech and evaluate it for use in the future.<\/span><\/p>\n
